A roof claim goes smoother when a qualified roofer documents the damage first and meets the adjuster on site. Roofers can't negotiate your claim for you, but they can make sure nothing is missed.
- Wind/hail deductibles are often 1-5% of dwelling coverage
- Alabama DOI recommends at least two contractor estimates
- Roofer can meet your adjuster on site
- Never sign over your insurance check
How the claim process works
1) Free inspection and photo report. 2) You file with your insurer. 3) The roofer meets the adjuster to walk the damage. 4) You receive the scope; if the estimate seems low, a contractor's estimate supports a supplement. 5) Work is scheduled; you pay your deductible.
Know your policy
Many Alabama policies have a separate wind/hail deductible, often 1-5% of the dwelling coverage, and some pay actual cash value (depreciated) on older roofs. The Alabama Department of Insurance recommends getting your own contractor estimates.
Protect yourself
Never sign over your insurance check or pay in full upfront, and be wary of anyone offering to 'cover' your deductible.

Roof Insurance Claims FAQ
Should I call a roofer or my insurance company first?
Many homeowners get a free inspection first to confirm there's real damage, then file. Either way, report promptly.
What if the adjuster's estimate is too low?
Alabama DOI guidance: get at least two reputable contractor estimates and use them to request a fair settlement; you can contact the Department if needed.
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
It can, depending on your insurer and claims history. An inspection first helps you decide.
What is a wind/hail deductible?
A separate deductible for wind and hail losses, often a percentage of your home's insured value rather than a flat amount.
